You may be concerned about changes you have noticed after an injury or illness. Or you may have received different diagnoses without ever feeling like anyone understood the full picture. A psychological assessment brings together your history, current concerns, standardized testing, and clinical expertise to help explain what is happening and why. The goal is not to reduce you to a diagnosis. It is to give you information that feels accurate, useful, and connected to your real life.

ADHD Assessments
An ADHD assessment looks beyond a checklist of symptoms. We consider how attention, executive functioning, memory, emotional well being, and your personal history may be affecting the way you function at school, at work, at home, and in relationships.
The goal is not simply to determine whether a diagnosis applies. It is to help you understand how your brain works so you can stop blaming yourself for the things that have always felt difficult and begin using support that actually fits.
An ADHD assessment may be helpful if:
• You struggle to begin or finish tasks, even when they matter to you.
• You regularly lose track of time, deadlines, appointments, or responsibilities.
• You can focus intensely on certain things but cannot direct your attention when you need to.
• School or work takes significantly more effort than other people seem to realize.
• You have been described as unmotivated, careless, disorganized, or inconsistent.
• You have wondered about ADHD but have never received a thorough evaluation.
What can an ADHD assessment clarify?
An assessment can help determine whether your experiences are consistent with ADHD and whether other factors may also be contributing. It can also identify your individual strengths, areas of difficulty, and recommendations for treatment, daily strategies, or additional support.

Neuropsychological Assessments
A neuropsychological assessment examines how different areas of cognitive functioning are working together. Depending on your concerns, this may include attention, memory, processing speed, executive functioning, language, problem solving, and emotional functioning.
The results can help explain why certain tasks feel different now, identify areas of strength, and give you and your care team clearer direction for treatment, accommodations, and recovery.
A neuropsychological assessment may be helpful if:
• Your memory, concentration, or mental stamina changed after a brain injury or concussion.
• You feel mentally slower or become overwhelmed more easily than you did before.
• An illness or neurological condition has affected your ability to function.
• You are having difficulty returning to work, school, or previous responsibilities.
• Your medical providers need a clearer picture of your current cognitive functioning.
• You know something has changed, even if you have had difficulty explaining it.
How can the results be used?

Learning and Academic Evaluations
A learning and academic evaluation looks at how someone processes information and how those abilities connect to reading, writing, math, attention, memory, and other academic skills. It can help distinguish a learning difference from attention difficulties, emotional concerns, gaps in instruction, or other factors that may be affecting performance.
Instead of continuing to guess, you receive a clearer understanding of how learning happens for you or your child and what kind of support could make a meaningful difference.
A learning evaluation may be helpful if:
• Reading, writing, or math remains difficult despite consistent effort.
• Academic performance does not reflect the person’s apparent ability.
• Homework takes significantly longer than expected.
• A student understands information but struggles to demonstrate that understanding on assignments or tests.
• Teachers or parents have noticed an ongoing pattern of frustration, avoidance, or falling behind.
• Formal documentation may be needed to explore appropriate academic support.

Psychological Evaluations
A psychological evaluation takes a comprehensive look at emotional, behavioral, and psychological functioning. We consider your symptoms, history, experiences, and current circumstances rather than examining one concern in isolation.
The purpose is to understand what is driving the difficulties you are experiencing and what kind of treatment or support is most likely to help.
A psychological evaluation may be helpful if:
• Your emotions or reactions feel difficult to understand or control.
• You have experienced persistent anxiety, depression, mood changes, or behavioral concerns.
• Therapy or medication has not helped in the way you expected.
• Several different concerns seem to be happening at the same time.
• A provider has recommended formal psychological testing.
• You need a fuller understanding before deciding what kind of treatment to pursue.
Will a psychological evaluation result in a diagnosis?
Not necessarily. The goal is accuracy, not assigning a label for the sake of having one. If a diagnosis fits, we will explain what it means and how it connects to your experience. If it does not, we will discuss what the results do show and what may be most helpful moving forward.

Diagnostic Clarification
Diagnostic clarification looks carefully at the entire picture. That includes your history, current symptoms, previous diagnoses, treatment experiences, relevant records, and assessment results.
The purpose is not to keep adding labels. It is to separate overlapping symptoms, identify what may have been missed, and give you an explanation that can guide more effective care.
Diagnostic clarification may be helpful if:
• You have received conflicting diagnoses.
• Your current diagnosis has never felt accurate.
• Treatment has focused on symptoms without addressing what is underneath them.
• Several conditions could potentially explain what you are experiencing.
• Your symptoms have changed over time.
• You or your treatment provider need clearer direction before deciding what comes next.
How is this different from a general psychological evaluation?
A psychological evaluation broadly examines emotional and behavioral functioning. Diagnostic clarification is especially useful when the picture is complex, previous explanations conflict, or there is a specific question about which diagnosis most accurately reflects your experience.

What is a psychological assessment and do I need one?
A psychological assessment is a structured evaluation that looks at how you think, learn, process information, and function emotionally and behaviorally. For young adults, these are often sought when struggles with focus, learning, or mood have not improved with therapy or have never been fully understood.
Many people come to Lumen having suspected ADHD or a learning difference for years without clear answers. Colleges, graduate programs, and employers often require documentation for accommodations, and an assessment provides both that documentation and the clarity behind it.
At Lumen, results are not handed over in a report for you to figure out alone. Everything is explained in a clear, practical way so you understand what was found, how it shows up in your daily life, and what to do next. If you have spent years wondering why things feel harder for you than they should, this is where you finally get answers.

What our assessment process looks like
From the first conversation to the final results, here is how the assessment process works at Lumen.
Intake & Interview Appointment
Before any testing begins, we start with a 90-minute virtual intake appointment. This is a conversation, not a test. We learn about your history, your concerns, and what you are hoping to understand about yourself. It gives us the information we need to make sure the assessment is tailored to you specifically.
Assessment Day
Assessment day is conducted in person at our Rochester Hills office and typically takes four to five hours. Breaks are built in throughout the day and you are welcome to bring snacks and drinks. If long testing sessions are difficult for you to tolerate for any reason, accommodations are available. Let us know in advance and we will make sure the day is set up in a way that works for you.
Feedback Appointment
Once your results are ready, we meet virtually for a 30 to 60 minute feedback appointment to walk through everything we found. You will not receive a report and be left to interpret it on your own. We explain what the results mean, what they say about how you think and function day to day, and what to do with that information going forward.
Tips for Assessment Day
A few things that make a real difference in your results. Get a full night of sleep the night before. Eat a meal before you come in. Take any medications you normally take as prescribed. If you take ADHD stimulant medication, do not take it on assessment day unless we have specifically instructed you to. This ensures your results reflect how your brain actually functions.
Self-Pay Information
If you do not have insurance coverage for assessments, the flat out-of-pocket rate is $850. This includes the full assessment process, intake appointment, testing day, and feedback session, conducted by a doctoral level clinical psychologist. If you have questions about coverage or cost before scheduling, reach out and we will walk you through it.
