Lumen Psychological Services
You’re trying to keep going, but it’s just not the same.
Maybe you have quietly accepted that this is just your life now. Maybe you stopped explaining it to people because putting it into words takes more energy than you have left. Maybe you have sat across from other providers and left feeling like they handed you tools built for someone else's problem.
At Lumen we work specifically with what happened to you. Not a version of it. Not a general approach that covers a broad enough range to technically apply. The actual thing. And we stay involved until something real changes.
What brings most adults to Lumen:
- You have been through the medical system and came out with more questions than answers.
- You are functioning. You go to work. You hold things together. And it is costing you more than anyone around you knows.
- The people in your life have moved on from what happened. You have not. So you stopped trying to explain it.
- You have done therapy before. It helped on the surface, but never reached what is underneath.
- You are a veteran and you have seen how institutional treatment works. You want something different this time.
- The pain has been real from the beginning. You are done being told otherwise.
- You have built a life that looks good from the outside. You are still angry, still distant, still not okay.
- You know what you want your life to look like. You just cannot figure out what is getting in the way.
If any of this feels familiar, you are in the right place. You will not have to spend the first few sessions proving it.
WHAT TO EXPECT
What therapy at Lumen looks like
We work on things like:
- Rebuilding a sense of identity after injury, trauma, or a life that stopped looking like yours
- Understanding why certain reactions keep happening and where they are actually coming from
- Processing the gap between who you were before and who you are trying to become now
- Reconnecting to what matters most to you and building a real path back toward it
- Working through chronic pain that has no structural explanation and no one has been able to treat
- Moving through veteran trauma, childhood wounds, or anger that has been running the show for too long
What Shifts
The relationship you have with what happened changes.
The version of yourself that got buried under everything that happened starts to come back. Not the person you were before. Something more honest than that. Someone who has been through something real and knows how to carry it without it running everything.
How We Work
A personalized approach built around you
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Adapted specifically for brain injury and neurological conditions, ACT helps you build a meaningful life inside your real circumstances, not a version of your life where the injury never happened.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
For people carrying shame, anger, or a deep sense that something is broken inside them, IFS helps make sense of those internal patterns without judgment.
Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy (EAET)
Specifically for people experiencing chronic pain with no structural cause found on imaging. EAET works with the brain’s learned pain pathways and has shown significant reduction in pain in clinical trials.
Psychodynamic and IFS Approaches
For adults working through childhood trauma, especially men who have built successful lives while carrying unresolved pain underneath, this approach goes to the root rather than managing the surface.
Values-Based Activity Mapping
A core part of brain injury recovery work. We identify what matters most to you and build a path back toward those things systematically.

Professional Credentials
What is a rehab psychologist & do I need one?
Most therapists are trained in general mental health. That training is real, but it does not cover the specific ways neurological injury, chronic pain, and trauma intersect with behavior, identity, and daily function. A rehab psychologist completes doctoral level training focused specifically on that intersection. That means understanding how TBI affects emotional regulation and memory, how chronic pain lives in the nervous system rather than just in tissue, and how to participate meaningfully in a care team conversation alongside an occupational therapist or neurologist.
At Lumen, our clinicians bring that level of training to every case. If your situation involves brain injury, auto accident recovery, neuroplastic pain, or complex trauma, the difference between a generalist and a specialist is not a small one. It is the thing that determines whether the approach actually fits the problem.

Why Work With Us?
Most rehab psychologists take a clinical, behavioral approach. Evidence-based, yes. But often cold, rigid, and disconnected from the person sitting in the room. We work differently.
At Lumen, we show up at the care team meeting. We coordinate with your occupational therapist, your speech therapist, your case manager, and whoever else is in the room. We return the call. We stay involved in your recovery from every direction, not just the one hour a week you are sitting across from us. That model is nearly unheard of in private practice. It is the standard here.
Our team brings doctoral level training, VA residency experience, and deep specialization in brain injury, chronic pain, trauma, and veteran care. Our approaches are clinically proven and evidence-based. And they are delivered with the kind of warmth, presence, and genuine investment that most people in this specialty never experience from a provider.
Our Mission
Our mission is to give people who have been dismissed, misdiagnosed, or told nothing is wrong a kind of care that actually meets them where they are. We treat brain injury, chronic pain, trauma, and the toll that comes with all three, using methods that are evidence based and delivered with real presence. We show up, we stay involved, and we treat you like a whole person, not a diagnosis.
Our Vision
We want rehab psychology to look different than it does now. Not cold. Not rushed. Not confined to one hour a week, disconnected from the rest of your care team. We are working toward a model where mental health care and physical recovery are treated as one process, not two separate systems that never talk to each other.
Our Purpose
This work is personal. I chose it because I watched someone I love relearn what it means to be themselves.

FAQ
Your questions,
answered
Can't find what you're looking for?
Have a question?
We would rather answer it now than have you sit with uncertainty. Reach out and a real person will get back to you within one to two business days.
What insurance does Lumen accept?
We accept Blue Cross Blue Shield, Blue Care Network, and Michigan no fault auto insurance. If your mental health needs stem from an auto accident, Michigan no fault law may cover your care in full with no copay and no deductible. Private pay is also available. Not sure what applies to your situation? Ask us and we will walk you through it.
Do I need a brain injury diagnosis to work with Lumen?
No. Brain injury, chronic pain, and trauma are our deepest specialties, but Lumen works with anyone navigating significant emotional, physical, or psychological challenges. Many of the people we work with do not have a formal diagnosis at all. If you are not sure whether we are the right fit, reach out. We will be direct with you.
I'm a referring provider. How do I refer a patient to Lumen?
Reach out by phone or through our referral contact form. We return calls promptly, accept auto-funded referrals, and participate in care team meetings throughout the treatment relationship. If you have a patient who needs a psychologist who will actually show up at the table, that is what we do. No phone tree. No delays. A real person will get back to you.
Why would I choose Lumen over a general therapist
Because the training required to work effectively with neurological injury, chronic pain with no structural cause, and veteran trauma is specific. Most therapists are not trained in these areas at the doctoral level. Cassidy Azzow, PsyD holds a PsyD and completed her residency at the VA specifically because of her focus on these populations. If your situation is complex, specialized training is not a nice addition. It is the baseline.
Can therapy actually help with brain injury recovery?
Yes. The psychological effects of TBI are well documented and include changes in mood, behavior, identity, emotional regulation, and cognitive function. Therapy cannot reverse neurological damage but it can significantly improve daily function, help you adapt to what has changed, manage the emotional dysregulation that follows injury, and rebuild a sense of identity after something life altering. For Michigan auto-funded patients this treatment is covered. There is no financial reason to delay it.
I've been to therapy before and it did not help. Why would this be different?
Because most general therapy is not built for what you are dealing with. The techniques matter. The training matters. If your previous therapist was not specifically trained in brain injury, trauma, or neuroplastic pain, the approach likely was not matched to your actual presentation. We will tell you in the first conversation whether what we do is a fit for what you are carrying. If it is not, we will say so.
Is therapy available virtually or only in person?
Both. We offer in-person sessions at our Rochester Hills, Michigan office and virtual therapy across the state. Many clients use a combination of both depending on their schedule and mobility. We will figure out what works best for your situation.
Do you work with veterans?
Yes. Dr. Azzow completed her residency at the VA, one of the most rigorous training environments for trauma and military mental health in the country. She has significant experience with PTSD, the way service shapes how people carry pain, and the specific ways veterans seek and engage with help. Our approach is direct, results-focused, and free of judgment.
How do I begin services if I was injured in an auto accident?
Patients can:
– inform their case manager they would like to work with us, OR
– contact us directly and we can coordinate services with their case manager.
